The fourth day of the blockade by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University (CU) unit was marked by explosion and arson.
The blockade supporters lobbed a handmade bomb in the city’s Sholoshohor Railway Station around 8am on Saturday, Station Master Shahabuddin said. They also set a railway track on fire in Nandirhat, but that was put out immediately. No shuttle train left the city since morning, the station master said. Amit Kumar Basu, leader of the BCL faction that called the blockade, claimed students exploded the bomb to make the blockade a success.
CU Vice Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury will hold talks with the proctor and assistant proctors later in the day to put an end to the deadlock.
The BCL faction is observing the blockade to protest against harassment of Awami League leader Nasir Haider Chowdhury Babul while attending a meeting to honour the late Vice Chancellor Abu Yusuf in April.
Babul was a former general secretary of CU’s BCL unit.
The central BCL expelled five activists of the university unit for their involvement in the incident.
Babul’s supporters are observing the blockade demanding resignation of the proctor for not taking administrative action against the five activists. – bdnews24.com
