Blogger Niloy killing – Ansarullah Bangla Team prime suspect: DB

The Detectives Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) suspects that banned Islamic militant outfit ‘Ansarullah Bangla Team’ might have involved in blogger Niloy killing.
Blogger Niladdri Chatterjee alias Niloy, who was residing at a rented flat on the 4th floor of a multi-storied building at Goran in the city, was hacked to death in the city’s Khilgaon area on Friday. He is the fourth Bangladeshi blogger killed so far this year.
Joint Commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Monirul Islam came up with the remark while talking to reporters a DB office on Monday. He said there is similarity in the killing of bloggers, who were hacked to death earlier and with Niloy. Primarily, it seems to us that ‘Ansarullah Bangla Team may by involved in Niloy killing, Monirul said.
Earlier on February 26 this year, Avijit Roy, founder of Mukto-Mona blog, was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured seriously as unidentified criminals stabbed them near TSC on the Dhaka University campus.
One month into the killing of Avijit Roy, another blogger named Washiqur Rahman Babu was hacked to death by a group of assailants at Begunbari of Tejgoan industrial area of the city on March 30.
Later, on May 12, blogger Ananta Bijoy Das, also an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Manch, was hacked to death by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Subidbazar Bankalapara in Sylhet city.
The Joint Commissioner (DB) said the Detective Branch (DB) has already received the Niloy killing case document for investigation from Khilgaon police station formally on Monday. Several DB officials have visited the place of occurrence on Monday morning as part of its formal investigation, he added.
‘Alamat’ (Evidences), which were collected from Niloy’s residence soon after the killing, have been sent to CID lab for forensic tests. Remarkable progress of the case will come after getting the forensic report, Monirul hoped.
About allegation of crossing limit while writing on religious issues, the Joint Commissioner (DB) said bloggers are now being monitored. If any blogger hurt anyone’s religious belief through their writing, he will be dealt with under the laws of the land, he added.
Earlier on Suday, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque also warned the blogger not to “cross the limit” while writing saying that the “freethinkers” should keep in mind that hurting someone’s religious sentiment is a criminal offence. – News Desk
