Blaming local Awami League leaders and a union parishad chairman for the attack on the Santal community in Gobindaganj upaizla, BNP on Friday demanded judicial probe into the incident.A nine-member BNP delegation made the demand at a press briefing at Madarpur Church field after visiting the Santal locality.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Joynal Abedin Farroque, who led the delegation, said local ruling party leaders and Satmara union parishad chairman Shakil Ahmed Bulbul instigated the indigenous Santal community to occupy the land. “And these people grabbed the same land from them joining hands with police,” he said.
He said the Santal people were now living under the open sky amid bitter cold as their dwelling establishments were burned down with the help of police.
Noting that they themselves saw the real picture of the Santal locality, the BNP leader also said they would submit their report to the party chairperson as well as the government.
He also demanded punishment of those involved in the incident, urging the BNP leaders and activists to stand by the victims.
On November 6, workers of Rangpur Sugar Mills along with police went to Bagda Farm area of Gobindaganj to reclaim land of the sugar mill allegedly occupied by the Santal community.
When the team reached the spot, the Santal people reportedly swooped on the law enforcers and workers which triggered a clash that left 30 people, including nine policemen, injured.
Later, houses built in five locations within the Bagda Farm were burned to ashes.
