BNP celebrates 38th founding anniv

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday celebrated its 38th founding anniversary across the country with a vow to ‘restore’ democracy in the country.
BNP and its front and associate bodies marked the day with various programmes, including discussions and hoisting party flag atop its offices across the country. UNB News Agency Reported.
In observance of the day, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, accompanied by party leaders and activists, paid tributes to party founder Ziaur Rahman by placing a wreath at his grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital in the morning and offered fateha there around 11:20 am.
She also joined a munajat seeking salvation of Zia’s departed soul.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamir Uddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-chairmen Selima Rahman, Mohammad Shahjahan, Ahmed Azam Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, chairperson’s advisers Amanullah Aman and Zainul Abedin Farroque, and joint secretaries general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Khairul Kabir Khokon were, among others, present.
Talking to reporters after placing wreaths, Fakhrul said the current ‘autocratic’ government has snatched people’s all rights as the country lacks democracy. “They want to eliminate opposition parties, especially BNP, with their repressive acts.”
Claiming that the country’s majority people support BNP, he said their party will not be defeated. “BNP had rebounded several times in the past facing obstacles and adversities. It’ll again bounce back and restore democracy under the leadership of Khaleda with people’s strong support.”
Leaders and activists of different units and associate bodies of the party also placed wreaths at the late president’s grave on the occasion.
On the occasion, the party flag was kept hoisted atop the buildings of the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office and other offices across the country.
BNP arranged a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the afternoon.
On this day in 1978, General Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party with a 19-point programme to build Bangladesh as a self-reliant country.
