BNP decide in principle to contest Dhaka North City polls

Dhaka – The BNP on late Saturday decided, in principle, to take part in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-election for the mayoral post.The party will finalise its mayoral candidate after the announcement of election schedule for the DNCC by-poll and watching the ruling Awami League’s candidate.
The decision was taken at a meeting of standing committee, the highest policymaking body, of the party with its chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair.
The meeting held at BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan also decided to send a high-powered team member to take part in election campaign in facour of party’s mayoral candidate in December 21 Rangpur City Corporation polls.
The chairperson asked the party secretary general to send the team led by a standing committee member in Rangpur soon to carry out electotal campaign for party candidate Kawser Zaman Babla.
The one and half an hour long meeting began at 9:00pm discussed the prospective party candidate for the DNCC including Tabith Awal, son of Abdul Awal Mintoo. Bu the decision in this regard will be taken after annoucement of election schedule, said a standing committee member.
The chairperson told the meeting that she would face the cases filed againat her legally and suggested the party leaders not to be worried about it, he said.
The former premier asked the party rank and file to take preparations for RCC polls and DNCC by poll for its mayoral post that fell vacant at the death of its mayor Annisul Huq.
The meeting also discussed the latest development in the political arena including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s statement at her press conference. – Staff Reporter
