The BNP will stage nationwide demonstrations Wednesday to protest ‘genocide by the government, corruption and misrule’, capping three consecutive days of shutdown that the Jamaat-e-Islami and the main opposition party had enforced.BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the protest programme in a press briefing at the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan Tuesday afternoon after the party observed a dawn-to-dusk strike.
After the end of a 48-hour nationwide strike by the Jamaat-e-Islami, the BNP called the daylong shutdown for Tuesday.
The Jamaat, the key ally of the BNP-led 18-Party Alliance, and the Islami Oikya Jote had extended ‘moral support’ to the Tuesday’s strike.
During the shutdown, the daily life of the people remained by and large unaffected.
The strike began with torching of buses in the capital’s Karwan Bazaar and Mirpur areas in the early hours of the day.
There were reports of the BNP activists taking out sudden processions in various areas, including Sabujbagh, Mugda and Gulshan Link Road, and exploding crude bombs.
On the other hand, the anti-strike supporters were out in large numbers on the streets of Dhaka.
