Dhaka, Feb 14 – The BNP on Wednesday ended its token hunger strike demanding the release of chairperson Khaleda Zia in the city three hours before the schedule time upon request from law enforcers.Speaking the one and half an hour long hunger strike, party leaders expressed their vow that they would take part in the next general elections by freeing Khaleda who has been landed in prison for five years on a graft case.
As part of the pre-announced peaceful programme, huge number of party leaders and activists took position in front of Jatiya Press Club at around 11:00am to press home their demand. The hunger strike was scheduled to continue for six hours from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
However, they had to end the strike as on-duty police requested them to move away from the spot by 1:00pm. The hunger strike joined by several thousand party leaders and activists created traffic congestion in front of the Press Club.
Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, a pro-BNP intellectual, expressed his solidarity with the hunger strike and broke it by offering water to the party secretary general at 1:00pm.
Senior BNP leaders including secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, took part in the hunger strike programme.
During the programme, party leaders and activists chanted various slogans demanding Khaleda’s release.
Khaleda is now in prison, after she was handed a five-year imprisonment last Thursday in Zia orphanage trust graft case on charge of misappropriating a Tk 2.10 crore donation fund of Zia Orphanage Trust.
Earlier, the BNP carried out a series of protest programmes on the streets following the imprisonment of Khaleda. All of the programmes were nonviolent in nature.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir concluded the hunger strike demanding immediate release of party chairperson from jail.
“From this programme, we demand that our leader (Khaleda) be released immediately,” he said.
Mirza Alamgir said their programme was scheduled to be continued until 4:000pm but they concluded it at 1:00pm following a request by the police authorities.
Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said they would not allow holding any election in the country keeping Khaleda in jail.
“The government wants to hold the election keeping Khaleda out of the election process. They are plying with fire. The consequence will not be good for them,” he said adding, WE will take part in the election with Khaleda.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed alleged Khaleda has been convicted in false case and said she would be freed through waging movement.
He criticized the government not to allow them to observe the hunger strike either in front of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh or party central office at Naya Paltan.
Meanwhile, pro-BNP lawyers, led by senior joint secretary of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum Sanaullah Mia, also observed a token hunger strike at Metropolitan Judge Court premises.
AS part of the countrywide programme, BNP’s different district and city units also observed the similar programmes.
Earlier, BNP leaders and followers formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Monday and staged a sit-in programme in front of party’s Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday protesting the jailing of Khaleda Zia by a lower court in a graft case. – Staff Reporter
