BNP exe-committee member Shahriar Rumy resigned

BNP executive committee member MM Shahriar Rumy yesterday resigned from all posts of the party.“I have tendered my resignation letters to party chairperson Khaleda Zia, acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party spokesperson Dr Asaduzzmana Ripon through courier service today (Sunday),” Rumy said yesterday confirming his resignation.

He said he tendered his resignation out of his conscience being a freedom fighter to join the mainstream of the liberation forces.

Shahriar Rumy, who is also senior vice president of Faridpur district unit of BNP, resigned his post 17 days after the retirement of party vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury from politics.

When contacted senior party leaders did not want to make any formal comments over the resignation of Shahriar Rumy.

A senior leader preferring to anonymity said Rumy’s resignation would not affect the party since there are 265 members in the executive committee.

“Rumy was a ruling party activist and now he has gone back to his own party. What can we do?” he said.

The leader however said the party leadership may resolve his case, if he resigned over the dispute among the local party leaders.

Shahriar Rumy said he is still undecided over joinig any other party. “Let me think for sometimes before taking a final decision in this regard,” he said.

Replying to a question he however said that he believes that it would be possible to implement the ideals of liberation war under the leadership of Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina.

Rumy said he had joined the BNP considering the changed situation after the national election in 2001. He had participated in the election from Faridpur-5 constituency as an independent candidate.

The resigning leader said that he could realize that his decision to join the BNP was not right for him.

Faridpur district BNP president Shahjada Miah told this correspondent that he came to know about the resignation of Rumy through journalists.

“I did not received any document regarding the resignation of Rumy,” he said adding that after hearing the news he tried to contact with Rumy over telephone but he did not receive his call.
