BNP firmly on Zia’s path:Fakhrul

The BNP spokesperson has rubbished claims by Awami League leaders of a conflict within his party.Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also asserted that the BNP had not strayed from its founder Ziaur Rahman’s ideals as claimed by Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury.“There’s no rift in the BNP,” he told reporters in Sylhet on Friday. “The Awami League leaders can say such things as political opponents.”After Chowdhury’s sudden retirement announcement on Thursday, several ruling party leaders said many more from the BNP would quit.Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said he believed Chowdhury’s quitting politics was the fallout of the party’s internal rift. After leaving politics, former diplomat Chowdhury said the BNP was not on the path shown by Zia.Fakhrul countered the claim, saying, Chowdhury’s words were merely his personal opinion.“The BNP has not strayed from Ziaur Rahman’s ideals,” he said.Chowdhury’s retirement, Fakhrul said, would not affect the BNP.He said a decision on Chowdhury’s resignation would be taken after party chief Khaleda Zia returns from the UK.“We’re a big political party and have been in power thrice. The BNP has carved a place for itself in people’s hearts in the last 35 years,” the spokesperson said. “The exit of one man will not be a big loss.”
