BNP holds peaceful Independence Day procession in capital

Dhaka, March 27 – The BNP has been able to hold a peaceful rally in the city streets Tuesday with police permission about four and half a months after its previous rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 12 last year.Thousands of party leaders and activists carrying posters, banners, festoons and placards joined the colourful rally from in front of the party central office at Naya Paltan amid uncertainty.
The BNP that was declined permission thrice to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan after chairperson Khaleda Zia sent to jail in graft case, however, does not know whether they would be allowed to hold its planned rally there on March 29.
Speaking at the gathering prior to the rally, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir vowed to restore country’s democracy and people’s rights’ and ensure the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and other leaders and activists from jail.
He demanded the government of holding the next general elections under a neutral government after dissolving the parliament.
Mirza Alamgir regretted that the people are celebrating the Independence Day after 47 years with broken heart and what he said the Awami League government destroyed the spirit of the war of liberation.
The rally led by central leaders began from in front of the party central office at about 2:15 pm and terminated at the same place after parading different roads including Kakrail and Shanti Nagar.
The female leaders and activists of the party and its front organizations took part in the rally wearing red and green coloured sharees while many leaders joined the rally by pickup vans and carts.
The precisionists also carried the national flag, placards, banners, festoons and portraits of party top leaders including Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.
They chanted various slogans demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia. The law enforcers have taken tight security measures to maintain the law and order.
Earlier, hundreds of party leaders and activists started thronging in front of the party central office and its adjacent areas with small processions since 12:00 pm.
The BNP secretary general alleged that the country’s people are now deprived of their all rights as the government has snatched those.
He said the people had fought the Liberation War with the spirit of establishing democracy in the country but the government wants to cling to power establishing one-party rule by destroying that spirit.
Mirza Alamgir called all to be vocal about restoring democracy, people’s all rights, including voting one and freeing Khaleda Zia from jail.
He said the people want peace, democracy and their rights to be restored.
The BNP leader said the government must free the BNP chairperson and all other political prisoners from jail.
BNP standing committee members Mirza Ababs and Nazrul Islam Khan and senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also spoke at the rally.
BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, vice-chairmen Abdullah Al Noman, Mohammad Shahjahan, AZM Zahid Hossain and Ahmed Azam Khan, chairperson’s advisers Zainul Abedin Farroque, Abdus Salam, Abul Khair Bhuiyan, Habibur Rahman Habib and Ataur Rahman Daly, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon and publicity secretary Shaheeduddin Chowdhury Anee, among others, joined the rally.
Meanwhile, the rally and presence of a huge number of party leaders and activists caused traffic congestion in the area and its adjoining areas for nearly one and a half hours since 1:00 pm pushing the people immense sufferings.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member yesterday expressed his optimism about the permission for holding its scheduled rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on 29 March.
He voiced party’s optimism while talking to newsmen after a meeting with the home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, at his secretariat office on Tuesday.
