Bnp in municipal polls for democracy: Fakhrul

The attitude of the government and the election commission hinted that the municipal polls won’t be credible and fair—though the BNP has taken part in the upcoming municipality polls in the interest of democracy, acting secretary general of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday.
“Decision to boycott polls is depending on election environment. The party strategically may boycott the polls, if there is no congenial atmosphere for taking part in municipality elections,” Fakhrul told reporters after a joint meeting held at BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.Expressing his concern over the upcoming municipality polls, he said, “we know the upcoming municipality polls won’t be fair and credible. You may raise question then why BNP is taking part in the elections—cause we belief in democracy. We are taking part in the elections as part our democratic movements.”
When asked regarding his concern over the polls, Fakhrul replied, “we have past experiences—like the national election in 2014, upazila and city corporations’ elections. Considering the experiences of these elections—the upcoming municipality polls won’t be fair.”
Replying to another question whether BNP would boycott the polls in the mid-time like the city corporation elections, the BNP leader said, “it is a strategy of a political party. Such decision is taken considering the moment and environment.”
He also demanded of the government for immediate release of detained political leaders.
Among others, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisor Shamsuzzaman Dudu, party spokesperson and international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon, organizing secretary Fazlul Huq Milon, Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, Abdus Salam Azad, Moazzem Hossain Alal Shirin Sultana were present during the press briefing. – Staff Reporter
