BNP leaders claim there are unaware of DMP’s rally permit

Dhaka, March 29 – The government has refused to allow BNP, the arch rival of the ruling Awami League to hold its rally at the venue and date of its choice. Instead, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) offered the party to hold its rally at IEB on a different day.The BNP had sought permission from police to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on March 29 and but on the eve of the rally the party on March 28 postponed it as it failed to obtained the green signal of the police.
Meanwhile, the DMP gave permission to the BNP yesterday to hold its planned rally at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital on March 30.
“We allowed BNP to hold its rally at IEB on Friday,” M Asaduzzaman Miah, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told BSS yesterday.
When contacted, DMP spokesman Masudur Rahman also confirmed that the BNP has been given permission to hold its rally at the IEB.
BNP leaders said they are not aware about the said permission of the police and they did not seek permission to hold a rally at the IEB.
Standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said the party sought permission to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on March 29 demanding the release of chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The party postponed the rally yesterday as the authorities did not give us permission. So far I know, we did not seek permission to hold the rally on March 30 at the IEB which is also not convenient for a rally, he said.
Assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu also said that they are not aware about such permission since the party did not seek permission to hold rally at the IEB on March 30.
He said the BNP has been declined permission to use Suhrawardy Udyan to hold a rally as a venue on March 29 for fourth time. Earlier, they also sought persimmon to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on February 22, March 12 and 19 following Khaleda Zia sent to jail but all times they were denied.
A special judge’s court punished Khaleda for five years in Zia Orphanage Trust Graft Case on February 8 and sent to the old central jail.
Earlier on March 27, BNP walked up to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to secure permission for a rally on March 29. – Staff Reporter
