The BNP-led 20-party alliance will now stage countrywide demonstrations on Sunday instead of Saturday, in protest against the price hike of power and gas.
The programme was rescheduled a day after party standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday announced the programme since the Hindu community will celebrate Janmashtami on Saturday. This is the first political programme of the 20-party alliance after its three-month hartal and blockade programme since January 5 this year.
In the statement issued by Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that the government is compelling people to shoulder the burden of thousands of crores of Taka it spent in the name of installing quick rental power plants.
BNP demanded immediate withdrawal of the price hike decision, terming it unjust, anti-people and illogical.
The statement urged people to raise united protests against such anti-people decision, otherwise, it will increase gas price further in December next.
The government has increased power prices by 2.97 percent and gas prices by 26.29 percent with effect from 1 September.
Meanwhile, one of the key components of the 20-party alliance, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has announced to stage demonstrations on Thursday for the same reason.
In another development, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed yesterday said the next is a matter of time.
“Parliament election in the country will be held very soon. This election will be held in a free and fair manner and it is a matter of time,” he said while addressing a discussion meeting at Institute of Diploma Engineers to mark the 8th anniversary of release of Tarique Rahman from prison.
He said the government would not survive if all the political parties unitedly take to the streets against its misrule and misdeeds. – Staff Reporter
