Dhaka – The BNP yesterday suggested the government to take the Teesta water sharing issue to the United Nations.
“There are international laws on sharing of waters of common rivers. If is necessary, you (government) should take the issue to the United Nations. So that we can get our fair share of waters,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Speaking at a book launching ceremony at Dhaka Reporters Unity, he said the BNP is nor anti-Indian not against its people.
“Should we be described as anti-Indian simply when we demand our share of water? Indeed, we never anti-Indian and against the Indian people if anything does not go against the interest of the country,” he said.
He regretted that India has now opened the dams upstream, causing a surge in water and submerging vast regions of Bangladesh.
The BNP leader reiterated that the government failed to bring back anything from the recent premier visit to India. The government has failed to protect the interests of the country and its people, he said.
He said, we will obviously criticize the government if it sis failed to protect our rights since it is the responsibility of the government people to protect the peoples rights.
Ziaur Rahman Research Council organized the function to launch its newly published book on Ziaur Rahman and its website. Mahtabuddin Jimi, president of the organisaiton presided over the meeting.
Demanding creating a level playing filed for elections, Mirza Alamgir said they want change of power through elections not by other means.
“You (government) have to create a congenial atmosphere for the elections giving us spaces for elections and permission for holding rallies,” he said.
He alleged that the people are suffering from sense of insecurity and said people are being killed one after another but they are not getting justice.
Founder of Ganasastha Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Kallayn Party chief Maj Gen (Retd) Muhammed Ibrahim, habibur Rahman Habib and BNP vice chairman Shawkat Mahmud, among others, also spoke on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
