Dhaka, Feb 18 – Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday alleged that BNP has now become a platform of corrupt people as its chief Khaleda Zia is now jail for committing corruption and its acting chairman Tarique Rahman was also convicted in graft case.He also asked BNP leaders how they abolished section 7 of their party constitution without holding a council session.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, was addressing a joint meeting at the Priyanka community center in front of the Dhanmondi party office. The joint meeting was organized to make the party’s March 7 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, a grand success.
Earlier, BNP named its senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman as its acting chief, a day after the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment in a graft case on February 8.
About the BNP’s ongoing agitation for demanding release of its chief Khaleda Zia, Quader said BNP leaders are telling that they have been waging peaceful movement to push their demand but actually they are being failed to forge strong agitation due to their organizational weakness.
“Had they [BNP] organizational strength to forge strong street agitation, they would have been carried out violent programmes as they did in the past,” he said.
Quader said BNP leaders thought that the people would join their anti-government movement after Khaleda’s arrest. “But they have been proved wrong as the people are satisfied with the development works of our government,” he added.
Referring to the next general elections, Quader asserted that the next parliamentary election would be free, fair and inclusive as the opposition BNP will take part in the polls.
“The BNP will be able to participate in the next general election, even if their party chief Khaleda Zia remains in prison,” he added.
About the March 7 rally, the AL general secretary urged party’s MPs and leaders to ensure huge participation in the rally to make it a grand success. – Staff Reporter
