‘BNP plans showdown at its November 12 rally’


Dhaka – BNP wants to stage yet another showdown at its November 12 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan to mark the National Revolution and Solidarity Day that the party observes on November 7.BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will be present at the planned rally as the chief guest. Along with the capital city of Dhaka party leaders and workers from adjacent districts will join the rally, according to party sources.
It the party is allowed to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, it will turn into a huge showdown following the party showed in front of the airport after the arrival of the party chairperson from London on October 18 and during her en-route visit to Cox’s Bazar to visit Rohingyas on October 28-31, said the sources.
The BNP has deferred the rally date at least for twice for what the party said different reasons and now the party wants to hold the National Revolution and Solidarity Day rally on November 12.
The BNP deferred that from November 11 to 12 as Juba League, the youth front of the ruling Awami League will hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on the day, insiders said.
The party has already sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 12 but yet to get permission.
“We are yet to get permission for the rally either written or verbal. But we expect that we will get permission for it,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while briefing reporters after a joint meeting at party’s central office yesterday.
He said the party chairperson would address the rally as the chief guest and the rally would be peaceful one.
“We expect that the government will extend its all-out cooperation to hold the rally as the ruling party leaders claim that they do not obstruct any peaceful and democratic programme of the political parties,” he said.
Mirza Alamgir said the government should prove truth of their statements by providing cooperation to hold the rally.
Replying to a question he said the joint meeting discussed different aspects to make the November 12 rally a success.
He termed the November 12 rally politically very important for the party and said they want to hold it peacefully.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Ahmed Azam Khan, Amanullah Aman, KHairul Kabir Khokan, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anie, among others, were present at the press briefing.
Earlier, the BNP secretary general held the joint meeting with leaders of Dhaka, Soth and North and districts nearing Dhaka and the party’s front organizations.
Gazipur district president Fazlul Haque Milon and Naryanganj ditrict president Moniruzzaman, among others, were also present at the meeting.
BNP joint secretary general and Narsingdi district BNP president Khairul Kabir Khokan said they want to hold a historical rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 12.
“All the party leaders and activists have become rejuvenated. Along with party activists, mass people will also take part in the rally,” he hoped.
He expects that the government would not create any obstruction to hold their peaceful rally. – Staff Reporter
