BNP seek Chief Justice’s intervention for Mahmudur Rahman release

BNP has sought the intervention of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha to help the release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman.“We seek the intervention of the chief justice so that Mahmudur Rahman is released soon,” said BNP joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi while addressing a media briefing at party’s central office at Naya Paltan on Monday.
The BNP leader’s request came hours after Mahmudur Rahman was shown arrested in a fresh case when he was scheduled walk out of jail yesterday. He was shown arrested on the case filed in January 2013 with Shahbagh Police Station under explosive act.
Police has demanded 10 days of remand for him with the new case while the hearing on the remand petition will be held at Dhaka CMM court on February 22.
Rizvi alleged that despite the Bangla daily editor got bail in all cases he has still been kept detained illegally and unlawfully on an excuse of a production warrant in a defamation suit.
He further said the production warrant was withdrawn yesterday and he was scheduled to walk out of jail but he has been shown arrested in another case.
The BNP leader also alleged that Mahmudur was tortured in the jail and he is not doing well. “He (Mahmudur) lost almost 14kgs. If this continues, his health condition may deteriorate further,” he apprehended.
Mahmudur was arrested on April 11 in 2013 in case under Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) law for publishing a skype conversation between a judge and a Bangladeshi lawyer abroad. Some 70 cases were also filed against him across the country and he obtained bails in all the cases. – Staff Reporter
