BNP takes up 3-day agitation to press Khaleda’s release


Dhaka – The BNP on Saturday announced a three-day new course of action including hunger strike and sit-in programme demanding the release of chairperson Khaleda Zia.As part of the programme, the BNP will form one hour long human chains on Monday, stage sit-in on Tuesday and stage seven hours long hunger strike on Wednesday across the country.
Senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programmes at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters on Saturday after ending the two-day nationwide protest programme in protest against landing Khaleda in prison.
He said the new programme has been announced demanding withdrawal of cases against Khaleda and release he from jail immediately.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Ataur Rahman Dhali, Farhad Halim Donar, Belal Ahmed, among others were present at the press conference.
Meanwhile, the BNP yesterday held protest rallies in the city and elsewhere in the country amid police attack and arrest of many leaders and activists to protest against landing Khaleda in jail.
In Dhaka, the law enforcers charged batons on a procession the BNP activists brought out from Purana Paltan area after Zohr prayer.
The procession led by secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was brought from in front of north gate of Baitul Mukarram and police chased them when they reached Fakirapool water tank area at about 1:30 pm to disperse them.
The law enforcers detained several BNP activists from the procession. Later, police arrested six leaders and activists, including BNP standing committee member Nabiullah Nabi, from nearby areas of the party office, BNP leaders claimed.
BNP vice chairman Barkatullah Bulu and Khaleda Zia’ adviser Joynal Abedin Faruk, organising secretary Fazlul Haque Milon, its publicity affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, BNP leader Mostafizur Rahman Babul also took part in the procession.
Another group of BNP leaders and activists also brought out a procession from House Building lane near Bijoynagar around 1:25pm demanding the release of Khaleda.
Police also chased the BNP men and arrested eight of them, including south city unit leader Nabiullah Nabi.
Earlier on Friday, they staged demonstrations across the country protesting at Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment and demanding her release.
On Thursday, a Special Court here convicted former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the much-talked-about Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. – Staff Reporter
