BNP to seek alternative venue to hold Nov 7 rally: Fakhrul
Dhaka – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said his party would seek alternative venue to Suhrawardy Udyan to hold the party’s planned rally on November 7.
He made this comment a day after the police denied them permission to use Suhrawardy Udyan for the rally to mark the “national revolution and solidarity day.”The BNP was talking to reporters after he along with newly elected leaders of Secchesebok Dal placed wreath at the mazar of BNP founder President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
He expressed his hope that they would get permission to hold the proposed rally at the alternate venue.
Mirza Alamgir said the denial proved that the government does not believe in democracy and dissident opinion.
“This incident unveiled the musk of the government. It is reflected that the government wants to establish one-party system,” he added.
The BNP was preparing to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan either on November 7 or 8 on the occasion of “national revolution and solidarity day.
The party also sought permission from the authorities concerned but the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday said it would not allow anyone to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.
The BNP at a joint meeting on October 20 decided to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan either on November 7 or 8.
The party observes the day to mark the “civil-military uprising” of 1975. The party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, was scheduled to attend the rally as chief guest.
