BNP wants workers’ rights, safety be ensured

BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Miah on Friday said his party supports the call of the US Congress for ensuring rights and safety of RMG workers.
“The US Congress members have advocated for ensuring the rights and safety of workers in Bangladesh. We also want the justified rights and security be ensured for the workers here. The call of the US Congress is an appropriate one,” he said.
Rafiqul was addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Medical Technologist Association of Bangladesh. To ensure the safety of the workers, the BNP leader urged the government to make giving clearances mandatory for the new industries before starting operations. “Ensuring workers’ safety has become essential following the Rana Plaza tragedy.”
US Congresswoman Grace Meng at an event in Jamaica on Thursday said the United States was aware of the conditions of workers in Bangladesh and wanted proper rights and safety for them.
Addressing the discussion, Rafiqul alleged that the government did not provide adequate compensation and assistance to the family members of the Rana Plaza victims.
He claimed that though the government raised a fund of Tk 128 crore for helping the Rana Plaza victims it only distributed Tk 22 crore. “So where did the rest of the money go?”
The BNP leader also alleged that those who got injured and crippled in the incident were not getting assistance from the government for their better treatment.
Rafiqul said the country is now under the grip of an undemocratic, unelected and repressive regime.
Mentioning that they had staged the long march towards Teesta Barrage on Tuesday and Wednesday in the interest of the country’s people, he said the success of their programme made the government unnerved. – UNB
