BNP will continue movement until Khaleda is released

Dhaka, Feb 12 – The BNP on Monday warned that the party would continue peaceful programme until chairperson Khaleda Zia is released from jail. “We want to make it clear that our peaceful movement will continue until our leader (Khaleda Zia) is released from jail,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while addressing a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
He asserted that no election would take place in the country keeping Khaleda Zia in the jail and keeping her out of election process.
The BNP organized the human chain from 10:30am to 12:00pm as part of its countrywide programme demanding the release of the former premier, who has been convicted in jailed in a graft case.
Several thousand BNP leaders and activists formed the human chain protesting the jailing of Khaleda in the Zia orphanage trust graft case. They chanted different slogans demanding the immediate release of Khaleda Zia.
The human chain took place amid tight security in and around the area. Huge number of law enforcers was deployed to maintain the law and order during the human chain programme.
Thanking people to join the programme defying obstruction, Mirza Alamgir said they expressed their anger and opposition against the jailing of our leader Khaleda Zia. “You have showed love for the chairperson by joining the human chain braving many obstacles,” he said.
This human chain programme proved that Khaleda is the most popular leader in the country and she has been convicted by implicating her unjustified way, he said.
He demanded immediate and unconditional release of Khaleda saying, “Our movement is for the release of Khaleda Zia from jail and restoration of democracy. Khaleda Zia has to be freed at this moment. We want her release,” he added.
Mirza Alamgir said, they demand for a supportive government, a neutral Election Commission for holding a peaceful and credible election.
‘We want to fulfill people’s hopes and aspirations by joining a peaceful and credible election. Let’s carry out a peaceful movement to free our leader from jail,’ he said.
He also demanded the government to stop arresting the party leaders and activists across the country.
Alamgir said their party wants an election-time neutral government and an independent and impartial Election Commission to hold the 11th parliamentary elections.
Standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the country’s people did not accept the ‘unfair’ jailing of Khaleda. He said the government must release her Khaleda and withdrew all the false cases filed against her.
Another standing committee member Mirza Abbas said the next election surely be held with the participation of Khaleda, no matter how many plots the government may hatch against her.
“It’ll be a nightmare if anyone thinks of holding the polls without her,” he observed.
BNP vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has been arrested from Segun Bagicha area while he was returning from the human chain programme at Jatiya Press Club.
Meanwhile, the BNP also formed similar programme at district, thana, upzila and city levels demanding the release of Khaleda.
As part of the programmes, the party will also hold an hour-long sit-in programme today, and a seven-hour hunger strike from 9am to 5pm tomorrow across the country.
On Saturday, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced a three-day protest programme from a press briefing at party central office at Naya Paltan.
Earlier, BNP leaders and activists staged demonstrations on Friday and Statuary protesting Khaleda’s conviction all over the country, including in the capital, amid obstruction by police.
On Thursday last, a special court here convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment. – Staff Reporter
