BNP’s half-day hartal in Bogra passes off


Bogra – The half-day hartal, enforced by the local unit of BNP to protest the conviction of party’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman in a money-laundering case, is going on peacefully in the district on Monday.
The shutdown begun at 6.00 am and will ended at 12.00pm. No untoward incident was reported, according to UNB news agency.
A large number of policemen remained deployed in the district to fend off any trouble.Local BNP unit on Sunday called the shutdown in the district protesting Tarique Rahman’s conviction in a money-laundering case.
Saiful Islam, president of district unit BNP, came up with the announcement at a press briefing.
Earlier on July 21, the High Court sentenced BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman to seven years’ imprisonment and fined him Tk 20 crore scrapping his acquittal in the money-laundering case.
On November 17, 2013, a Dhaka court acquitted Tarique while sentencing his friend Giasuddin Al Mamun to seven years along with a fine of Tk 40 crore in the ACC case filed for illegally sending Tk20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.
