Border settlement gives scope for more trade with Myanmar: Hamid

President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday said the settlement of maritime boundary disputes between Bangladesh and Myanmar provided an excellent opportunity to enhance maritime commerce and cooperation between the two countries.
The President said this when Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar Navy Admiral Zeya Kyaw Htin Thura Thet Swe made a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, Abdul Hamid said the exchange of more training for both sailors and officers between the two countries may be considered in order to foster friendship and sharing knowledge.Admiral Zeya Kyaw Htin Thura Thet Swe said Myanmar always attaches importance to its relations with Bangladesh, adding that this visit would increase the friendly thought between the two countries.
He also said there is a need for mutual cooperation to face natural calamities, and underscored the need for joint naval exercises between the two countries. Secretaries concerned to the President office were present. – UNB
Tagore’s 153rd birth anniversary Thursday
The 153rd birth anniversary of great poet Rabindranath Tagore will be observed on Thursday. The government has chalked out elaborate programmes marking the day.
This year’s theme of the birth anniversary is ‘Rabindranath and Bangladesh’.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the eve of the day.
The main programme will be held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium at 11 am where Finance Minister AMA Muhith will be present as the chief guest.
On the day (Thursday) at 7 pm, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will organize a cultural programme at its premises.
The birth anniversary programme will also be celebrated at the places endowed with Tagore’s memory — at Sheliadah of Kushtia, Shahzadpur in Sirajganj, Patisar in Naogaon and Dakshindihi in Khulna — under the management of the local administration.
A 3-day programme began at Sheliadah Kuthibari in Kushtia on Wednesday. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu inaugurated the programme as the chief guest.
Besides, a discussion will be held on May 9 (Friday) at Bangla Academy. State-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) and other private TV channels will telecast the inaugural programme at the national level as well as other programmes. – UNB
