Rail communications of the northern region with the rest of the country, including the capital, remained suspended since Wednesday morning as an under-construction bridge collapsed in Parbatipur upazila.
Railway sources said a bridge was being constructed over the Chota Jamuna River at Monmathpur on Parbatipur-Dinajpur route whereby
alternative arrangements were made for running trains.
However, incessant rains for the last few days removed the earth from beneath the alternative rail route, forcing the authorities to run
trains over the under-construction bridge.
But, the bridge broke down on Wednesday morning with one of its pillars subsiding, bringing the rail communications of Dinajpur,
Panchagarh and Thakurgaon districts with the rest of the country into a total halt.
Railway assistant engineer Ariful Islam told UNB over mobile phone that the rail communications on the route may resume after Saturday
following repairing of the bridge.
