British HC granade attack case verdict on Feb 11


The High Court yesterday fixed February 11 for delivering its verdict on the appeal filed by the three condemned convicts and two lifers in a case for 2004 grenade attack that killed three people and injured 70, including former British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury.After concluding the hearing on the death references and appeals, the HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain fixed the date for delivering its verdict.
During the appeal hearing, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said that the attack targeted the then British High Commissioner, Anwar Choudhury. The diplomat was visiting the shrine during a three-day trip to Sunamganj, his birthplace, days after he joined the office. The militants were involved in conducting the attack, he added.
The chief state counsel of the state sought highest punishment for the killers of the then British High Commisioner Anwar Choudhury of Bangladesh.
The attack took place at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet on May 21, 2004 where three policemen were killed and over 70 were injured, including Choudhury, in the grenade attack.
The Bangladesh-born envoy, barely 18 days into his new assignment, suffered minor leg injuries in the grenade explosion after Friday prayers.
The 700-year-old shrine, 278km northeast of the capital, jolted with the force of the blast that came at about 1:40pm with a big bang, sending worshippers running for cover.
The Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal On December 23 in 2008 in a verdict awarded three militants of Harkatul Jihad (Huji) including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan death penalty in connection with the grenade attack case.
The two other sentenced to death are operatives of the outlawed militant outfit, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul and Md Delwar Hossain alias Ripon
It also awarded life terms to two other accused in the case–Mufti Hannan’s brother Muhibullah alias Muhibur Rahman alias Ovi and Mufti Main Uddin alias Abu Zandal.
Later, the convicted prisoners through the prison authorities filed separate appeals with the HC against the trial court verdict that awarded them death penalty and life term imprisonments in the case. After hearing on the appeals the HC yesterday fixed February 11 for delivering its verdict in the case.
Advocate AKM Foyez, Advocate Mohammad Ali and state appointed lawyer Advocate Hasna Begum were appeared for the appellants during the hearing at the HC.
