The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting a bumper production of jackfruits in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) during the current season.
DAE office sources said a total of 2,857 hectares of land have been brought under jackfruit cultivation in the hilly district.A good number of ‘Moji’ (jackfruit flowers) that develops into a matured jackfruit, fell off the trees due to absence of rainfall in the region. Even then the production of the juicy fruit is satisfactory than the previous year, said DAE officer Taroon Bhattacharya.Despite bumper production, the regional growers are not happy as they are being compelled to sell their fruits at a lower price to meet their essential needs, said grower Shahalam of Rangamati district.Another grower Mohammad Liakat Hussain, an inhabitant of Chalatali village in Bhashainyaadam union under Langadu upazila said the fruit is being sold at Taka 20-30 each. The growers would get more profit if appropriate measures are taken, he added. The jackfruit growers also urged the authorities concerned to take
necessary measures for ensuring better marketing facilities to get fair prices. -BSS, Rangamati
