Chased by cops, farmer drowns in Bhola pond


A farmer drowned in the pond after being hit and chased by two police constables on the Bhola-Bheduriya launch ghat road in Bheduriya village of sadar upazila in Monday morning.The deceased was identified as Abu Jamil, 50, son of Mohammad Shahjahan, resident of the village and a local farmer.Two local residents said Jamil was drying paddy in the sun on the road around 7:30am.Two police constables of Bhelumia police investigation camp-Abdul Hannan and Ismail , who were going to Bheduriya launch ghat for performing duty, asked Jamil, why he was using the road for drying paddy.At one stage, they locked into altercation and Hannan threw a stick towards Jamil and chased him.After being hit by the stick, he slipped into the pond.Later locals rescued him from the pond and took him to sadar hospital where doctors declared him dead.Following the incident, local people confined two police constables to a room at the village.Agitated villagers also blocked the road protesting the incident and the vehicular movement on the road came to a halt.On information, Mobashwer Ali, officer-in-charge of Bhola Model police station, with additional police members rushed to the spot.Mohammad Moniruzzaman, superintendent of police, also visited the spot.Later the authorities suspended the two police constables. -UNB, Bhola
