Two schoolboys were killed and another 10 people injured in a clash between two rival political groups at Chandraganj Bazar in Sadar upazila on Monday night.
The deceased were identified as Rabiul Islam Shimul, 14, a class VIII student of
Pratapganj High School and Farhad Hossain, 16, a student of class X
of the same school.
Witnesses said the clash ensued between the ruling Awami League-backed Nasir group and BNP-backed Solaiman Uddin Jisan group, for establishing their supremacy in the locality.
The clash occurred at about 10:30 pm following an altercation between
the supporters of the two groups at Deopara village in Sadar
During chase and counter-chase, both the groups exchanged
several gunshots, killing Shimul on the spot and injuring 10 people including five with bullets.
The injured were admitted to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital where Farhad succumbed to his injures at about 11:30 pm.
Later, the Nasir group activists set fire to the houses of BNP leader Ali Karim and Tofael Ahmed of the locality.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
Rakib Ul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, confirmed the clash.
