College teacher among 2 killed in Phulbaria fight with cops

Dhaka  – Two people, including a teacher of Phulbaria Degree College, were killed and 20 others injured as police allegedly charged baton on teachers and students during their
demonstrations seeking nationalisation of the college in the upazila in Mymensingh on Sunday.The victims were identified as Abul Kalam Azad, a teacher of Botany Department of the college and Safar Ali, 70, a passerby.Witnesses said the teachers and the students of Phulbaria Degree College brought out a procession in front of their college demanding its nationalisation,UNB News Agency Reported.At one stage, police charged baton to disperse them, triggering a clash that left 21 people injured.Safar Ali, an octogenarian man who was passing through the area, died on the spot during the clash.The injured were taken to a private community hospital where Abul Kalam succumbed to his injuries, said Prof SM Abul Hashem, a teacher of the college and convenor of Phulbaria Degree College Movement Committee.Denying the allegation police claimed that the pedestrian died of cardiac arrest.Rifat Khan Rajib, officer-in-charge of Phulbaria Police Station, said the protesters threw brick-chips at police during the clash and police charged baton to disperse them.
