Narayanganj – A new five-member committee has been formed to investigate the assault and humiliation of high school headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta for his allegedly offensive comments about religion, unb news agency reported.Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Mousumi Habib of Bandar upazila told reporters on Tuesday that the three-member committee that was formed earlier on Monday has been dissolved and a fresh five-member committee, headed by upazila secondary education officer Nurul Amin, has been formed to investigate the incident ‘as the issue is very sensitive’.
The committee has been asked to submit its report in five days.
Meanwhile, despite widespread criticism over the arbitrary punishment of a high school headmaster in Bandar upazila for his allegedly offensive comments about religion, the school authorities have now suspended him.
The Managing Committee of Piyar Sattar Latif High School took the decision against Shyamal Kanti Bhakta at an emergency meeting on Tuesday, said committee President Faruqul Islam.
The charges include making anti-Islam remarks and beating students, he said.
On May 13, locals beat Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Bandar area of Narayanganj for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
At one stage, local MP AKM Selim Osman forced him to do sit-ups holding his ears.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, the wife of the headmaster, who is undergoing treatment at a local hospital under police custody, said they were now passing their days feeling insecure.
Police superintendent of the district Dr Khandker Mahiduddin said two policemen have been deployed for the security of the headmaster.
Referring to his reported remark on Monday describing the punishment of the teacher as ‘not a criminal offence’, the SP claimed that his statement was distorted.
Mentioning that a probe committee has been formed in this regard, he said legal action will be taken after receiving the probe report against those involved in such public punishment.
Meanwhile, students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) formed a human chain by holding their ears in front of the university central library around 11 am protesting the deplorable act against the teacher.
Besides, Primary Teachers Rights Protection Forum called a half-hour work abstention from 12 pm to 12:30 pm for May 19 in all the primary schools across the country protesting the public humiliation of the teacher.
They also demanded removal and punishment of MP Salim Osman, who is also an influential businessman and one of the brothers of controversial Narayanganj MP Shamim Osman.
On the other hand, Law Minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday said the public punishment, for whatever reason, is indeed an offence.
“To make a teacher do sit-ups holding his ears is a deplorable act and it’s a punishable offence in my consideration. Those who were involved in the incident should be punished,” said Anisul.
