The government has formed a high powered committee to remove 43 illegal religious structures and educational institutes from the bank of river Buriganga.
“We have decided to remove all illegal structures from the bank of rivers guarding the capital. The probe committee asked to submit its report with recommendations within a month after identifying the illegal structures and how to remove or shift them,” shipping minister Shajahan Khan, who chaired the inter-ministerial meeting, told the reporters at the secretariat yesterday.A 15-member inter-ministerial committee formed headed by shipping ministry additional secretary Nasir Arif Mahmud. Other members of the committee are—shipping ministry joint secretary Noor-ur Rahman as member secretary while representatives of the water resources, land, housing and religious ministries, BIWTA,  marine police, Islamic foundation, olama mashaikh, religious welfare trust, concerned metropolitan police commissioner, district commissioner and superintendent of police as members.
Among others, water resources minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, lawmaker Begum Sanjida Khanam, shipping ministry secretary Shafique Alam Mehdi, water resources secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan, BIWTA chairman commodore M Mozammel Huq, representatives of Islamic Foundation and Khatib of Baitul Mukarram attended the meeting.
The meeting also decided that the committee will inspect all the spot physically across the country for taking action to remove illegal structures built on the banks of rivers, Shajahan Khan said.
The inquiry committee has been directed to submit a report within one month, he added.
“A section of unscrupulous people have constructed religious structures on the bank of rivers or on the government lands with ill motive to control it under their possession.  Those who have constructed such structures without government’s permission with ill motive—these religious structures like mosques, temples will be removed to free the river banks. So that none will be dared to take such scope in the future,” the shipping minister said.
The concerned department has already evicted 4,740 illegal structures from the banks of river and reclaimed 215.73 acres of lands. Besides, 760 illegal concrete buildings are also removed. – Staff Reporter
