Coordinated efforts for eradicating child marriage stressed

Speakers at a workshop have underscored the need for comprehensive efforts of all stakeholders and adequate awareness to eradicate the curse of child marriage from the society permanently.RDRS Bangladesh organised the workshop on ‘Prevention of Early Marriage’ under its “Strengthening Community Based Organizations for Pro-poor Democratic Governance” (SCOPE) project at Ulipur Upazila Parishad auditorium in Kurigram on Thursday.Presided over by Ulipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dr Mohammad Mansur Alam Khan, government and NGO officials, Imams, marriage registrars, public representatives, civil society members and media workers participated in the daylong workshop.Upazila Women Affairs Officer Shahana Akhter, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Anisur Rahman, Upazila Youth Development Officer Md Moniruzzaman and Officer-in-Charge of Ulipur Thana Jamir Uddin addressed the workshop.Coordinator of SCOPE project of RDRS Bangladesh Abdullah Al Mamun, its Senior Trainer Shah Alam, Programme Coordinator Shariful Alam Khan, Senior Manager (Social Development) Atikur Rahman and chairman of Hatia union Abul Hossain also spoke.Speakers at that workshop blamed discriminatory attitude towards
female children at family levels, superstitions, religious misinterpretations, eve-teasing, illiteracy, dowry, poverty and lack of social awareness as the main reasons behind child marriage.They suggested for strict implementation of the concerned law, increasing punishments, creating social awareness, considering early marriage as offence, registering marriage through affidavits checking
national identity cards for preventing child marriage.They narrated the grievous impacts of child marriage on the premature girls leading them to shattered and catastrophic lives destroying their future increasing neonatal, maternal and children deaths, mostly
in rural areas.They asked for rectifying previous mistakes through launching social movement involving people from all walks in the society to create renaissance against the curse that has engulfed the backward rural people creating unrest in family life and society.
They highly lauded the role of the professional groups, forums and mfederations of RDRS Bangladesh in preventing hundreds of child
marriages, hilla’ marriages, violence against women, extending legal and social supports to such victims over the years.They stressed for involving GO-NGO officials, religious leaders, marriage registrars, guardians, professionals, public representatives, civil society members and heads of educational institutions to permanently eradicate early marriage from the society. -BSS
