Dhaka, June 10 – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said Bangladesh will turn into a ‘subservient’ country if the current government prolongs its power.“The country’s existence will be at stake and people will not get back their lost rights if this Awami League regime hangs onto power,” he said.
The BNP leader came up with the remarks while speaking at a programme arranged by ‘Arpan Bangladesh’ at a city hotel to give financial assistance to the family members of seven BNP leaders who were affected by the government’s repressive acts.
Fakhrul urged all, irrespective of party and opinion, to install a pro-people government and restore democracy and people’s rights.
Pointing at the remarks of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, Fakhrul said, “We’ve seen the newspaper reports that AL general secretary said they cannot understand what BNP wants. How can you understand? Your eyes have turned blind, while the ears deaf.”
“But you shouldn’t forget one thing that the storm doesn’t stop if anyone keeps eyes turned off. The thunder continues even if one becomes deaf. And the thunder will continue. There must be a storm against what you’ve done. You declared the fight against humanity. You’re killing common people and sending them to jail by filling false cases against them. The incidents will definitely be tried one day, and you must be held responsible to people,” the BNP leader said.
Terming the government illegal, Fakhrul said it grabbed power without having people’s mandate and is repressing opposition activists and leaders. “It’s completely illegal the way you govern the country,” he said.
Alleging that the Awami League government is hanging onto power illegally, he urged the government to quit paving the path for a neutral election to establish a government of people through votes.
He expressed deep concern over picking up of Chhatra Dal Narsingdi unit joint general secretary Siddiqur Rahman Nahid by a group of men introducing themselves as members of law enforcement agencies.
The BNP secretary general demanded the immediate safe return of Nahid to his family. – UNB
