Court asks Khaleda to appear in Zia Trust Graft case

Dhaka-The Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka on Thursday asked BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to appear in his court on December 1 for her self-defence in the Zia Charitable Trust Graft case, and if she fails to do that her bail in the case will be cancelled.Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar passed the order at the makeshift court set up on the old city’s Alia Madrasa ground of Bakshibazar area. The court granted the time petition, submitted on behalf of Khaleda Zia and fixed the new date. The BNP Chief’s counsels Sanaullah Mia and Zia Uddin Zia filed the petition seeking time that says, Khaleda Zia could not appear in the court on Thursday due to illness.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the graft case on July 3, 2011 with Tejgaon Model Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her former political secretary Harris Chowdhury, Harris Chowdhury’s the then assistant private secretary and now Director-in-Charge of BIWTA’s marine security and traffic department- Ziaul Islam Munna and combined Dhaka City mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka the then private secretary Monirul Islam Khan. Harris is on the run, while two other accused persons have already pleaded not guilty in the case and sought justice.
Besides, the ACC lodged the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008, with Ramna Model Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman, now living in UK, and four others for a misappropriating over Tk 21 million that case as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.Special Correspondent
