A Dhaka court on Monday dismissed the case filed against fifteen police officials, including a former DMP Chief, over the ‘custodial death’ of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Nuruzzaman Jonny in January 2015.

Judge Md Asaduzzaman of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order on Monday finding no sufficient grounds for taking into cognizance the charges brought against them, said Additional Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Tapash Kumar Pal.

Former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah, and Krishna Pada Roy, the then Deputy Commissioner of Detective Branch of police and now Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, among others were made accused in the case.

Jonny, then General Secretary of JCD Khilgaon Thana unit, a pro-BNP student body, was allegedly killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Dhaka’s Khilgaon area on January 20, 2015, a day after his arrest in an arson case.

The victim’s father, Md Yakub Ali, filed the case with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court under Section 15(2) of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prohibition) Act, 2013. - Special Correspondent
