Court drops plea seeking travel ban against Bashundhara MD

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka today dismissed a petition seeking travel ban against Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir in a case filed over the rape and murder of a college student.

Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yasmin Ara of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order after a brief hearing on the plea.

But the court did not mention any reason for dismissing the petition.

On September 13 last year, Investigation Officer Golam Moktar Ashrafuddin, also an Inspector of PBI, submitted the petition before the court, seeking the travel ban.

The court also asked PBI to submit the probe report by June 5 in the same case filed against Anvir and seven others. With the latest one, the PBI took 12 dates to submit the report. On April 20, the same court asked the PBI to submit the report by today.

Police recovered the body of the 21-year-old college student in a flat in the city’s Gulshan area on April 26 last year.

The deceased’s elder sister on September 6 filed a case with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 of Dhaka, bringing allegations of rape and murder.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam, chairman of Bashundhara Group, and six others were also made accused in the case for abetment.

On September 29, the High Court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Anvir in the case.
