Terming indirect polls to Zila Parishad “unacceptable and meaningless”, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) on Tuesday said it wouldn’t participate in the polls. In a statement CPB president Mujahidul Islam and its general secretary Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed said Zila Parishad is a part of local government. Zila Parishad has special importance as local organization to empower the people in the grassroots. That is why it is must to hold the polls through direct vote of the people. If the zila parisahd election is held through indirect voting, it will in fact hinder the empowerment process of the people in the grassroots and will squeeze the democratic rights further, the statement added.“The way the voting to zila parisad will be held is contrary to our constitutional spirit and not consistent with article 59 of the constitution,” the left leaning leaders added. The top leaders of CPB said their party would expedite the long time fight to empower the local government and urged people to join them in the fight.Earlier, BNP and HM Ershad led Jatiya Party announced they would not participate in the Zila Parishad polls. On Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the schedule for the Zila Parishad polls setting 28th December as the voting date.
