The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Tuesday granted bail to cricketer Shahadat Hossain Rajib’s wife Jesmin Jahan alias Nitya in a case filed for torturing her domestic help.Judge Qamrul Hossain Molla of the court passed the order after hearing on the bail plea of Nitya in the morning. Defence counsel Kazi Nazibullah Hiru pleaded for her bail while the court granted bail till January 17 of the coming year.
On October 4, police of Mirpur Model Police Station detained Jesmin Jahan Nitya in the case filed on the charge of torturing domestic help 11-year-old Mahfuza Akter Happy. On the day, the court sent Nitya to the jail rejecting a five-day remand petition of police. However, the court allowed police to quiz her at the jail gate for three days within five working days. Accordingly, police quizzed her at jail gate.
It has been learnt that in the primary interrogation, Nitya admitted that she had tortured Happy, her domestic help.
Meanwhile, on September 6, cricketer Shahadat filed a general diary with Mirpur Model Police Station claiming that their housemaid had gone missing. The following day, a journalist named Mozammel Hossain sued the couple over torturing their domestic help with Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000. Being sued, the couple went into hiding.
On October 4, police arrested Nitya from her father’s house while the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka sent her to the jail rejecting her bail plea. A day, after, Shahadat surrendered to the court while the CMM Court sent him to the jail. He was also put on a three-day remand for interrogation by the police.
On September 21, Magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakraborty of the CMM Court recorded a judicial statement of victim Happy in connection with the incident.
Happy, a daughter of Arab Ali, hails from Jamalpur district. She was rescued with several injuries on her body on September 6. She managed to escape out of Shahadat’s house in the morning and got a shelter at night.
