Crime reporters protest aginst rowdy behaviour of cops


Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) on Sunday gave a 7-day ultimatum to the police administration to take action against policemen involved in assaulting and behaving with members of the organisation.
The ultimatum was given from a protest rally held at CRAB premises with CRAB president Isaraf Hossain Isa.
The leaders of the association demanded punitive action against the responsible policemen within seven days. Otherwise, they will announce greater programmes taking other professional journalists’ organisations, they said.CRAB’s former treasurer Mahbub Alam Lablu and former cultural secretary Indrojit Sarkar were assaulted by plain clothes and uniformed police at Moghbazar crossing, while its present organising secretary Shakhwat Hossain Kawser was subjected to rowdy behavior near Officers Club in the city separately in the same day on May 18.
Besides, senior CRAB member and senior reporter of the daily Ittefaq Pinaki Das Gupta also became victim of rowdy behavior by the Police Super of Faridpur district on May 20 when Pinaki phoned the police officer to get his comment about present transport strike in the northern district.
Shakhwat Kawsar and Mahbub Alam Lablu narrated how they became victims of police assault and rowdy behavior in the protest rally.
Moderated by CRAB general secretary, the protest rally was also addressed, among others, by president of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Shakhwat Hossain Badsha, its general secretary Ilias Hossain, CRAB’s vice-president Mohd Jahangir Alam, former president Akhtaruzzaman Lablu and its organizing secretary Shakhwat Hossain Kawsar, former joint secretary Omar Fartuk Al Hadi, former organizing secretary Nittya Gupal Tutu and senior CRAB member Azad Hosasain Sumon and Santosh Kumar Mandal, Osman Gani Babul and Mamunur Rashid. – UNB
