About 286,245 people of 54,489 families were affected and 19,929 houses fully damaged by cyclone ‘Mora’ that hit the country’s coastal areas on Tuesday, according to an initial official estimate.
While briefing reporters at the ministry, Additional Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Golam Mostafa on Wednesday said six people were killed and 61 others injured by the cyclone that swept 106 unions of 31 upazilas in 16 districts.
The deceased are Jahida Sultana, 14, and Hajera Begum, 40, of Rangamati, and Sahina Aktar, 10, Rahmatullah, 45, Sarwar Khatun, 65, Abdul Halim, 65, of Cox’s Bazar, he said.
Of the 16 districts, Cox’s Bazar experienced the worst destruction, the additional secretary said, adding that 39,599 houses were also damaged partially.
He said around 475,669 people took shelter in 11,820 cyclone centres in 14 districts.
Mostafa said the government has provided a total of Tk 1.37 crore to the cyclone-affected people.
Besides, some 29,021 metric tonnes of rice will be distributed among the victims, he said.
The additional secretary said the family of each deceased will be given Tk 25,000 for funeral and other formalities and damaged houses will be rebuilt at government initiative.
The severe cyclone, Mora, made landfall in the country’s coastal belt early Tuesday.
