Democracy must to guard against militancy: Maj Hafiz

BNP vice chairman Hafizuddin Ahmed on Monday warned that Bangladesh will turn into a militant country if the government does not restore democracy immediately.
Speaking at a discussion, he also hinted that their chairperson Khaleda Zia will wage a fresh movement to reinstate democracy on her return home from London.“This country will soon become a militant state if the government doesn’t create a scope for restoration of democracy and allow people to enjoy their basic rights,” Hafiz said.
Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press club, demanding the release of its detained leaders, including Yasin Ali, Ashrafur Rahman and Zillur Rahman Khokan.
The BNP vice chairman alleged that the government has turned the country into a police state by annihilating democracy, people’s freedom of expression and the rule of law.
Describing BNP as a popular and strong democratic party, he said they will wage a movement in a democratic manner whenever their party chief calls for it to restore democracy.
Hafiz urged the leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies to get ready to take to the streets to dislodge the current regime.
The BNP leader alleged that the government is going to hold the municipality polls on party line in bid to ensure the victory of their candidates by using the administration and resorting to vote fraud.
He, however, warned that their party this time will put up a strong resistance if the government tries to manipulate the elections as it did in the last three city polls held on April 28 this year.- News Desk
