Deposition of witnesses deferred in Rana Plaza case

Dhaka-A Dhaka court on Tuesday deferred the depositions of the witnesses in the case filed for violating the building code while constructing the Rana Plaza building to October 26.Judge Afsana Abedin of the Senior Judicial Court of Dhaka passed the order deferring recording the depositions of the witnesses. On the first day of recording the depositions of the witnesses, the prosecution could not produce the witness to the court. Rajuk authorized officer Helal Uddin was scheduled to testify on Tuesday, but he was not present in the courtroom. Meanwhile, the prosecution filed a petition to the court seeking time.
On June 15, 2014, SM Mafidul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), filed a cases against 17 people, including Sohel Rana and his parents, on the charge of constructing Rana Plaza building with a faulty design. Later, Mafidul Islam submitted the charge sheet against 18 persons to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Dhaka.
The commercial complex, built with a faulty design at Savar on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka, collapsed on April 24, 2013, killing over 1,136 people and injuring some 2,515 others.
The local municipality had given approval in 2007 to construct a five storied structure, but the building owner Sohel Rana built an eight storied commercial complex on wetland, triggering the collapse.
