The train communication of Chittagong with rest of the country, including the capital, remained snapped following the derailment of an intercity train near Pahartali Railway Station in the city on Wednesday afternoon.Officer-in-charge of Pahartali Police Station Ranjit Kumar Barua said four rear bogies of Dhaka-bound ‘Mahanagar Godhuli’ from Chittagong veered off the tracks around 3:30 pm while leaving the railway station, halting the train communication on different routes, including Chittagong-Dhaka and Chittagong-Sylhet.

All the four bogies overturned by the rail tracks after the derailment, leaving at least 15 passengers injured.Sources at the Railway East Zone control room said the accident happened due to over speed of the train while changing rail line.Contacted, General Manager (East Zone) of Bangladesh Railway Abdul Hai said the salvage train is yet to reach the spot as it is still busy in another rescue operation at Fouzdarhat in Sitakunda upazila where a Dhaka-bound freight train derailed in the morning. However, the train started for Dhaka with 12 compartments, excluding the derailed ones.Meanwhile, a five-member probe body, led by Divisional Traffic Officer (East Zone) Feroz Iftekhar, has been formed to look into the accident.
