Dhaka, 19 July – Dhaka dwellers spent an extremely unpleasant day on Thursday as the mercury rose to 37.6° Celsius making it the hottest of the year. High humidity content of the air caused maximum sweating, said weather forecasters of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. On Wednesday, the highest temperature in the country was 36.5 degrees Celsius in Sylhet. The highest temperature in Dhaka was 34.7 degrees Celsius. Dhaka’s temperature rose by 3 degrees Celsius in a span of 24 hours.
Weather expert Nazmul said that the weather was uncommon but not unusual because there was no rain at the beginning of Shrabon, the second month of the rainy season of Barsha in the Bangla calendar.
The temperature in Dhaka was 40.2 degrees Celsius on Apr 22, 2014, the highest in the capital in five decades. This season, the highest temperature of the country was 40 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi on June 15.
On Thursday, the maximum temperature in the country was recorded at 39 degrees Celsius in Rangpur’s Rajarhat.
Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barishal divisions and the regions of Comilla and Noakhali, according to the Meteorological Department.
The heat wave may ease, the met office said in the weather forecast for Friday.
Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at a few places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country.
Monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
