In response to a call of BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed for holding inclusive election through holding talks among the political parties, Minister for Commerce and senior Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed said the BNP has to wait for talks till ending the tenure of the present Parliament.
The two elderly leaders were addressing a seminar on “Political parties in Bangladesh and democracy at BRAC Centre Inn in the city. Barrister Moudud said country’s democracy has been killed through the voter less January 5 parliamentary polls as the people could not take part in it.
He said excessive falsehood and immorality had intruded in politics damaging the reputation that earned historically.
“The country is going through a void in its politics and democracy. It is the major responsibility of the government to restore democracy in the country,” he said.
The BNP leader claimed that the seven murders in Narayanganj has taken place as the country is going through a void in democracy.
“The incident is the beginning of a dangerous situation and it will be deteriorated further if such situation is prevailing,” he added.
The seminar organised by Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a non-government organisation, was held with its chairman economist Rehman Sobhan in the chair.
AL leader Tofail Ahmed called upon the BNP to wait for dialogue.
“Please wait, dialogue will be taken place. The dialogue will be held on time for the next elections after ending the tenure of the present Parliament. You have to wait for that,” he said.
He questioned whether the BNP is seeking dialogue form the government which it termed as illegal.
Tofail said the politics has slipped out of politicians during two marshal laws after 1975.
Those became ministers during the martial law were never involved in politics. They joined the politics after becoming ministers. From then the grassroots level leaders were had been undermined, he observed.
Minister for Water Resources Anisul Islam Mahmud, BNP leader Shamser Mobin Chowdhury, former chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, Brig Gen (Retd) Shakhawat Hossain, Prof Imtiaz Ahmed and Bodiul Alam Majumder, among others, also addressed the function. – Staff Reporter
