The Department of Environment (DoE) has issued notices to 27 brick kilns in Narayanganj City Corporation and in two municipalities in Rupganj to stop their operations immediately, or face being shifted for not using concrete chimneys. The DoE will start its drive against the brick kilns soon for causing serious pollution to the environment. As per the rules, a brick kiln must have a concrete chimney with a height of 120 feet. Besides, the Brick Burning (Control) Act, 1989 prohibited setting up of brick kilns in municipalities and residential areas and near fruit orchards or on cropland. The 27 kilns include 19 located in Tarabo municipality, six in Kanchan municipality and the remaining two in Siddhirganj of the city. Deputy Director of DoE Narayanganj office Golam Mohammad Bhuiyan said the brick kilns were given a final deadline of June 30 to stop their operation. They were also served the final notices. “The DoE will launch its drive against the illegal brick kilns soon,” he added. He said out of 243 brick kilns in Narayanganj, only 90 kilns use concrete chimneys. – UNB
