Don’t further extend lifetime of CNG-auto rickshaws: Nat’l body

Dhaka, Dec 10 – The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR), a non-government organisation, on Sunday urged the government not to extend the lifetime of CNG-run auto-rickshaws again. The NCPSRR chief adviser Manzurul Ahsan Khan, its president Mohammad Shahid Mia and general secretary Ashish Kumar Dey made the demand in a joint statement on Sunday, a press release of NCPSRR said.
‘If the government approves the lifetime of the risky auto-rickshaws further on the face of the owners’ unethical pressure ignoring the concerned experts and drivers, it would be quite illogical and a threat to passenger’s safety,’ the statement alleged.
The NCPSRR leaders demanded the authorities concerned should be strict against owners to stop taking daily extra money from drivers and urged the government to take steps against drivers for compelling the passengers to pay an extra fare.
The National Committee leaders made the demands against the backdrop of the auto-rickshaw owners’ demand to the government to approve 6-year extension of their auto-rickshaws’ lifetime again though they had earlier got a 6-year extension in three phases after expiring economic lifetime of the auto-rickshaws.
Such a demand is not only unethical and illogical but also against public interests, the release said.
The leaders of the organisation urged the Road Transport Ministry and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority to give national interests a priority instead of surrendering before transport owners’ unacceptable pressure. – News Desk
