DRU protest rally June 30 for trial of Sagor-Runi murder

Journalists’ leaders yesterday expressed their deep concern over the deterioration of law and order in the walk of growing killings, enforced disappearances and abduction.
Addressing a protest rally organized by Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in front of the National Press Club, they said such situation could not have been taken place if the trials of all killings including Sagor-Runi journalist couple are held.DRU president Shahed Chowdhury announced that they would stage demonstration and form a human chain programme in front of its premises at Segun Bagicha in the city at 11:00am on June 30 demanding the trial of killers of journalist couple Sagor Sarwar and Meherun Runi.
He warned the DRU will announce tougher programme if the government fails to arrest the killers of Sagor-Runi journalist couple immediately and hold their trial.
“The movement will continue unless the trail of Sagor and his wife Runi, both members of the DRU is held. And newer programme will be announced,” he added.
Members of DRU and different journalists’ organizations including National Press Club, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) took part in the protest rally wearing black badge on their months.
Addressing the rally, journalists’ leaders emphasized the need for greater unity of journalists’ community to ensure safety and security of the working journalists.
President of a faction of BFUJ termed the failure of the government to hold the trail of Sagor-Runi journalist couple an obstruction in ensuring freedom of press.
Secretary general of one faction of BFUJ Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, former DRU president Sakhawat Hossain Badsha, DRU secretary Elias Khan, DUJ president Abdul Hye Sikder, secretary Jahangir Alam Prodhan, fomer BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, former secretary of a section of DUJ Saban Mahmud, DRU vice president Rafiqul Islam Azad, organizing secretary Mursallin Nomani, among others, also addressed the rally. – Staff Reporter
