The general students of Dhaka University (DU) on Thursday demanded change of the proposed metro rail route a part of which has been planned to be built through DU campus. The demands came out from a press conference under the banner of ‘General Students of DU’ held at the Mahdur canteen of Dhaka University at noon.

While reading out a written statement, Taisha Tasrin, a DU student said that our movement is not against development activities of the state but we want to implement the development activities without any questions.

“We demanded the change of proposed metro rail route only as it will humiliate prestiges of Razu Memorial Sculpture and Mausoleum of three leaders, Dhaka Gate and hamper university’s congenial atmosphere by creating noise” She added

She also mention that Associate Engineers and Consultants (AECL) limited conducted archeological survey titled Dhaka Metro rail Project, Bangladesh Historical Importance led by JU Prof Dr MM Hoque in 2015 which suggested to change the metro rail route in case of Shamsad Bhaban, run the line Bijoy Soroni instead of taking to cubs towards Shamsad Bhaban and to trail towards Ramna and Matshya Bhaban area from Shahbag instead of conducting line towards TSC area to safeguard the area and its adjacent archeological, historical and national records.

“So we will not have any demands if the proposed metro rail project will be implemented as per AECL’s suggestions” She added

She also announced that they will stage a solidarity rally at the altar of Raju Sculpture near TSC of DU on January 20 in this regard.

The metro trains will begin its journey at Uttara and pass through Pallabi, Farmgate on its way to Motijheel. Two stations will be built on the campus, one at Shahbagh and the other at Doyel square.
