The Election Commission will soon take a decision on whether the army will be deployed during the upcoming city corporation elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed informed the mayor and councillor candidates about the commission’s position while exchanging views with them at Chittagong on Saturday.
“We’ll have a meeting with law enforcing agencies on Apr 19. The matter will be decided after that.”The BNP wants deployment of army during April 28 city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong.
But the party-backed candidate in Chittagong, Monjur Alam, did not raise the matter during the discussion, while others did.
Jatiya Party-backed mayor candidate Sulaiman Alam Seth said the army should be deployed a week ahead of the elections.
“I demand army deployment,” said Wayez Islam Bhuiyan of Islami Andolan. “There is no other way to ensure safety of ballot boxes.”
Saifuddin Ahmed Robi, another mayor candidate, said he did not think it was necessary.
The CEC in his speech said, “It is no longer possible to snatch ballot boxes. There will be massive deployment of law enforcers.
“I appeal to law enforcers to take highest security measures in these cases.” – Agencies
